Effective public speaking is a skill that is relatively difficult to master. Most people who have trouble when speaking in public usually experience minor to severe levels of stage fright. They also find it hard to catch the attention of their audience, insert some humor into their speech, and use speech variations to make their delivery more interesting to their listeners.

Effective Public Speaking Lessons for Aspiring Public Speakers

Effective public speaking is something anyone can excel at with a little practice.

If you are experiencing these difficulties every time you step in front of a large crowd and give them a piece of your mind, you should research more about effective public speaking tips. Ethan Musolini’s book entitled Overcome Public Speaking Fear Instantly offers some of the best tips that could shape you into an effective public speaker. Here is a sneak peak of the effective public speaking tips included in this self-help book.

Catch the attention of your audience

Your speech should start with an effective attention-step that could immediately arouse the interest of your listeners. Think of an interesting fact, a funny anecdote, or a surprising statement that could catch their attention. Once you have incorporated this technique in your speech, you would experience satisfaction from delivering your speech to an attentive and interactive audience.

Structure your speech and use transitions

A person who delivers an easy-to-understand and well-structured speech finds it easier to please listeners with what he or she is trying to say. Since effective public speaking skills stems from remarkable speech-writing skills, you should do your best in crafting a coherent and smooth-flowing speech.

When writing your speech, you should highlight at least two or three main ideas. Your introductory paragraph should contain a preview of your main points, and your conclusion should include a summary of your main points. You could also use visual aids like line graphs and bar graphs if you are going to deliver an informative or statistical speech.

Transitions are important for effective speech delivery. Examples of transitions that could help you tie up your entire speech are first, second, next, and finally.

Play with your voice

An effective speaker knows how to play with his or her voice. Effective public speaking entails the need to know where to pause while delivering a speech, utilize the voice to emphasize specific points, and slow down or speed up to exhibit different emotions. Appropriate gestures should also be used to demonstrate the how something moves, looks, or works.

The most important thing you should remember when delivering a speech is to use appropriate facial expressions. You should smile when you are talking about something pleasant, stifle a life when you are narrating something funny, or put on a sad face when you are explaining a sad event or fact. You would easily move your audience with your speech once they use an effective play of emotions while delivering it.

Here are a couple of great tips to help you become a better public speaker. Some people are naturally great public speakers but others of us have to work at it. A couple tips can really improve your ability to related to your audience and deliver amazing public speeches.

1 – Practice Makes Perfect
Practice by yourself while imaging the audience right in front of you or deliver a few rehearsal speeches to your close friends and family. Do whatever you need to do so you can build up your confidence and review the material before you have to get up in front of your audience. Don’t be afraid to rehearse until you are bored out of your mind, it will help mash the speech into your head and give you confidence when speech time comes.

2 – Introductions are Important
In the introduction you will need to establish your credibility; let the audience know why they should listen to you and care what you have to say. Make it exciting and interesting but also informative about your qualifications to speak on the topic. Introduce only what is necessary as you do not want your speech to be half an introduction, get the points across and move on.

3 – Body Language
Keep your shoulders back and your chest out. Make it look like you are extremely confident in what you are saying and that the audience should believe you. You need to be able to use your body language and voice to project an image you want portrayed to the audience, if you look relaxed and entertaining, you will be. You are what you feel, it is pretty simple. Relax, put your shoulders down, smile, and take a deep breath before stepping out on stage or in front of the crowd.

4 – Project Your Voice
Make sure that you are enunciating each individual word and that you are projecting your voice so that everyone in the audience can hear you. Sometimes it is even a good idea to ask your audience to ensure that everyone is able hear what you are saying. There is nothing more frustrating for an audience member than not being able to hear what is said.

5 – Eye Contact
Make sure that you are looking out into your audience; this helps to make them feel like they are engaged in the speech. Staring into space while you are speaking makes audience members feel disengaged so they start to lose interest in the topic.

The first and most important rule to help you master the art of public speaking is to practice. Not only should you practice speaking in front of people, you should also practice covering the information you will be speaking on. As you spend more time speaking in front of large groups of people you will start to become more comfortable with the entire process. However, no amount of being comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people will make up for not being prepared on the material you are speaking on.

Another key to becoming a great public speaker is to have a good understanding of your target audience. Some public speakers never master the ability to gauge their audiences and their speaking events suffer because of it. There are plenty of resources online to help a public speaker discover what “kind” of an audience they are speaking to. This information can help a speaker to change or adapt their style of speaking so that the audience members are more receptive to the information being presented and more willing to actually pay attention to the presentation.

Finally, and this will come easier as the speaker practices more, is the importance of body language. A speaker who stands stiffly behind a podium and lacks any kind of animation is very difficult to pay attention to. Masters of public speaking use their body language to emphasis the points that they are making. A good idea is to use the entire space available to you; while pacing back and forth is not the best way to do this, slowly moving from one area to another will help display your confidence and keep the audience focused on you. Another thing to consider with body language is in the way you present yourself to the audience, stand up straight with your shoulders back while you project your voice and your audience will be more inclined to take what you are saying seriously.

Learning to take mistakes in stride is very important as well. Make sure you do not dwell on the mistakes you might make — no matter how big you think they are. They are only going to detract from the rest of your speak and ruin your presentation. Laugh it off, fix the mistake, and move on.

A great motivational speaker has the ability to not only encourage, but also influence a large group of people to listen to and eventually act upon his or her message. Motivational speakers are so effective because they actually believe in the message they are spreading and want you to believe in their message too. If you believe strongly enough about a certain topic and want to share that message with others then developing your motivational speaking talents is a great way to get started. Some people are naturally great motivational speakers but others learn to be better speakers with a little determination and a lot of practice.

One of the best at this is a man by the name of Tony Robbins – if you haven’t heard of him – you are missing out. Tony brings a unique energy to motivational speeches that allows you to connect very deeply with him. The power in his voice and the passion about what he is speaking shines through in his work. He is a multimillionaire for what he has built for himself and he gives motivational talks to some of the most influential people in the world. Make sure you check out his TED talk on Google or Youtube, it will give you a great understanding of what a true motivational speech could look like.

Leaders, figureheads, and experts in the various areas that they might be speaking about are typically the most commonly found motivational speakers. This is because individuals are more apt to pay attention to and actually consider what someone they respect or someone who has a great reputation is saying. Even if you are not that well known by your audience you should still list your qualifications during your introduction to lend credit to your presentation. Give the audience a reason to care about what you are saying and believe that you are telling the truth and your message have a much larger impact.

In addition to already having great public speaking skills, motivational speakers need to use their facial expressions and body language to add emphasis to the points they are trying to make. Part of the power of motivational speeches comes from the speaker’s absolute belief in the message they are spreading; hand gestures, facial expressions and body language can help a speaker to make specific points. Standing up straight with your shoulders back makes a statement of confidence to the audience. Also, facial features and different expressions can help to bring a level of emotion to increase the power of the motivational speech.

Being afraid of making a mistake is the only real fear anyone needs to have about giving a speech. Because what else can go wrong? Sure you could sweat a little bit, feel anxious, but those are both normal things, and who cares anyway?

But mistakes do happen, sadly and learning to adjust to your mistakes and relax is a very important part of being a good speaker. Even Steve Jobs, the king of product unveilings has mistakes. How does he deal with them? He corrects them and moves on, or he laughs at himself, his company, or pokes fun at his competition. All seamlessly. It ins’t that hard, keep reading to get some help with dealing with public speaking mistakes.

Mistakes are bound to happen at one point or another. Great public speakers have learned how to roll with their mistakes instead of getting flustered because of them. Public speaking is nerve racking enough that making mistakes during a speech can completely disrupt a speaker’s train of thought. It can be a hard thing to do, but speakers need to learn that they should not worry about mistakes when they are speaking.

While you do need to be prepared before speaking on a topic, there is such a thing as being over prepared. Some speakers are so concerned about making mistakes during their speeches that they plan out every single word they are going to say during the presentation. If you have ever sat through a speech where the individual read straight from note cards then you know how miserable it can be to listen to these speakers that are this afraid of making mistakes they over prepare to an extreme.

It can be a hard thing to learn, but speakers who embrace their stutters, mispronunciations and memory lapses typically end up being better in the long run. These kinds of mistakes can lighten the mood of a serious speech if the individual makes a joke out of them instead of becoming flustered. Other times, mistakes in a speech can lead the speaker off on a tangent about another interesting point or a funny anecdote that might bring some value to the speech.

In the end, speakers who take their mistakes too seriously will not be able to deliver the best speeches that they can. Even with a lot of preparation, mistakes are bound to happen during a speech. Audience members are usually really forgiving and understand that mistakes do occur. Do your best to not let one mistake ruin an entire presentation.
